Carl grows up to be a good young man as Rick's change his attitude to rescues the Woodbury citizen while they were in prison, helping the strangers on every street they met, and leading a group responsibly. The change in Rick's attitude turned out to have a big impact on Carl's mind to protect, help, dan kill anyone who threatens his family. At least, that's the principle he hold on till he met Siddiq and got himself killed.
I though Carl was dead in pretty well, even if no one is really happy leaving their loved ones in this world.
